WhatsApp limits forwards to tame spread of ‘fake news’
WhatsApp messenger has released terms of message forward to five per day. The new version will roll out the regulations January the 21st 2019.
The reason of regulating the forwarding of messages globally is to limit the number of times a user can forward a message to five, in a bid to fight misinformation and rumors.
“We’re imposing a limit of five messages all over the world as of today,”
Victoria Grand, vice president for policy and communications at WhatsApp, said at an event in the Indonesian capital.
Precursory, a user could forward a message to 20 individuals or groups hence the limit expands globally a measure WhatsApp put into place in India in July after the spread of rumours on social media led to killings and lynching attempts.
The WhatsApp, is estimated to have 1.5 billion users and its currently trying to look for ways to stop misuse of the app in respect to complaints brought about by the users that the platform is currently spreading fake news, manipulated photos, audio hoaxes, and videos with no context and have no way of monitoring their originality.
The new forward roll out will just require an update to activate the limit of forwarding starting this day.
All Android users will receive the update first, followed by users of Apple’s iOS.
