‘IEBC not ready for fresh presidential election’ – NASA tells Diplomats
The NASA coalition has today reiterated that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission (IEBC) is not ready to hold the fresh presidential elections scheduled for 26th October 2017. NASA leaders in a meeting this morning with a section of the diplomatic community comprising of ambassadors and high Commissioner of the US, UK, EU, Norway and Denmark noted that there had not been reforms at the polls body and that it was not ready to participate in a sham election.
At the meeting, NASA leaders maintained the position that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is not ready to conduct free, fair and credible elections.
‘This has been confirmed by Dr. Roselyn Akombe who resigned from the Commission last week and IEBC chairman Mr. Wafula Chebukati in his address to the nation, also last week. We made it clear that if the electoral commission itself is not confident of conducting credible polls, it follows that the said elections can only be sham elections that NASA shall not be part of,’
said Hon. Mudavadi in a statement.
‘NASA wishes to reaffirm to the country, the international community at large and its supporters in particular that the elections scheduled for 26th do not meet the conditions deduced from the Supreme Court ruling and our subsequent irreducible minimums that we shared both with IEBC and the Public. Three days to the election there is nothing that can change in the electoral infrastructure and our position is final that we do not recognise the election scheduled for 26th October and we shall not participate in it because it doesn’t serve the country’s interest,’
added Hon. Musalia Mudavadi.
