Official grilled over Sonko’s 96 million ‘confidential budget’, 12 vehicle fleet
Flamboyant Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko secretly set aside over Ksh 96m in the annual budget allocation, thetruth.co.ke has established.
City MCA’s led by the Legal and Justice committee chair Malde Jayhendra unearthed this irregular allocation yesterday during a committee sitting.
Appearing before the no-nonsense committee at City hall, Sonko’s fleet manager told the committee that the Governor had been enjoying the ‘confidential budget’ since he assumed office, without giving clear reasons as to who authorized the budget.
The committee Vice Chairman Kilimani MCA Hon. Ogeto further pressed him to explain what ‘confidential budget’ means ,but the officer was unable to substantiate ,leaving the committee in a sombre mood .
According to the law, the ‘confidential budget’ must be approved by the Interior Ministry and it is allocated to the President only. Further, there was no letter obtained from the Interior Ministry directing that Sonko be allowed to have a ‘confidential budget’.
The committee further revealed that Governor Sonko has been misusing county vehicles whenever he goes around the city to inspect various projects.
According to the fleet manager, official vehicles assigned to the Governor are 5 but Sonko uses 10-12 vehicles, adding that the Governor often picks others from other departments paralyzing their operations.
He revealed these before the committee as he was put to task to explain why he needed an increment in the fuel budget for the Governors fleet in the 2019/2020 financial year budget.
