Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has called on the National Assembly to prioritize the Pandemic Response Management Bill, emphasizing its importance in preparing the country for future health crises.
Speaking at the inaugural Nairobi Health Scientific Conference 2024, held in Nairobi and chaired by the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Governor Sakaja highlighted his experience as the chair of the COVID-19 Committee during the pandemic. He underscored the need for a robust legislative framework to address such emergencies effectively.
“This bill, Your Excellency the Deputy President, seeks to establish systems to handle unexpected occurrences. We don’t know when a pandemic may strike, and it is crucial to be prepared,”
Sakaja stated.
The Governor reflected on the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, noting the difficulties in mobilizing resources and implementing response measures.
“If Parliament considers this bill, it will focus on how to define an event as a pandemic, how to marshal resources effectively, and establish clear protocols,”
he explained.
Governor Sakaja also praised the Nairobi Health Scientific Conference as a platform for bringing together experts to tackle challenges in the health sector.
“This conference unites bright minds, fostering collaboration to address pressing health issues. Together, we can overcome these challenges,”
he concluded.
The conference marked a significant milestone in Nairobi’s health agenda, aiming to generate innovative solutions for a stronger healthcare system.
