Mombasa Memorial Cathedral to Install State-of-the-Art Digital Organ

Local News

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Mombasa Memorial Cathedral will soon install a state-of-the-art digital organ, according to Sub-Dean, the Very Rev. Dr. Dorcas Kiundu.

Speaking during a Sunday notice at the Cathedral in Mombasa County, Dr. Kiundu said installation plans for the new digital organ are at an advanced stage. The instrument will be the first of its kind in East and Central Africa, and only the second in Africa.

She noted that the installation of the custom-built 4-manual and pedal digital organ is scheduled to align with the Cathedral’s 120th anniversary, marking exactly 120 years since its coral-stone consecration in 1905.

“This voice-customised organ, featuring a 3-manual and pedal console with traditional motorised drawstops, uses the latest Viscount Physical Modelling technology,”

she explained.

The organ console, along with an adjustable bench, pedalboard, and security doors, are all finished in dark mahogany wood.

Dr. Kiundu also revealed that Peter Kweheria, Director of Music and Worship Arts, had recently traveled to the UK to assess the organ’s design and construction.

She added that the system has been designed to acoustically fill the Cathedral, which is recognized as one of the most magnificent worship spaces in the world.

The digital organ will be officially unveiled on the afternoon of May 31st, during a celebration marking the Cathedral’s 120th anniversary and the installation of this historic new instrument.
