Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Coast Secretary Gideon Mutiso has confirmed that the union will hold its national elections, starting from grassroots to national leadership levels.

Speaking during a Sunday service at the Voice of Salvation and Healing Church International (VOSH) in Mombasa County, Mutiso said COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli will be free to decide whether or not to seek re-election.

Atwoli will be at liberty to defend his seat if he wishes. The decision is entirely his,”

Mutiso said, adding that the veteran trade unionist had previously indicated plans to step down but asked for time to make a final decision.

Mutiso, who was accompanied by COTU Coast Region Chairman Maurice Ohanga, emphasized that any decision by Atwoli would be made next year, ahead of the elections.

He dismissed calls for Atwoli’s resignation, saying those advocating for his departure lack the mandate to make such demands.

“To make matters worse, those calling for his retirement don’t even have COTU votes,”

Mutiso stated.

He urged critics to wait for the proper electoral process, warning them against premature campaigning.

“Let them stop dancing a lame dance before the real dance begins,”

he said.

Mutiso assured that the upcoming elections would be conducted fairly and transparently, noting that COTU traditionally uses a secret ballot system.

“No one is barred from opposing Atwoli. The polls will be free and open to all,”

he concluded.
