Kenya just found its newest star—and he’s not your regular barber. On Sunday night, 28-year-old Jose Jay (Joseph Japheth), a Donholm-based barber and gospel singer, pulled off the performance of a lifetime to snag the title of Kenya’s Next Superstar. His prize? A cool KSh 1 million and the bragging rights of being the first-ever champ of the hotly-contested reality tv show on StarTimes.
The grand finale—staged at Charter Hall, Nairobi and broadcast live on StarTimes Rembo TV, Rembo Plus, and the StarTimes ON app—was the climax of a 14-week talent rollercoaster that started with thousands of dreamers back in May. From 18 contestants in the academy, eliminations week after week whittled the hopefuls down to six, all gunning for glory on the biggest stage yet.

And when the lights dimmed and the beats dropped, Jose Jay stole the show. His power-packed vocals, magnetic stage presence, and raw gospel energy not only wowed the judges—King Kaka, Size 8, and Motif Di Don—but also won over the fans.
Not far behind, Rennic (Rennick Nzalwa) cruised into 1st runner-up, walking away with a brand-new motorbike, while Jambia (Brian Koome) clinched 2nd runner-up, flashing home with bespoke jewellery worth KSh 150,000. Other finalists—Brenda Morii, Albert Okumu, and Andy Saharan—left with massive fanbases and bragging rights of having survived Kenya’s toughest talent grind.

An emotional Jose Jay, still buzzing after his win, summed it up:
“I’ve been in many competitions before but never made it to number one. This time, I gave it one more shot—and God answered my prayers. Music is my life, and this platform has finally given me the spotlight. I’m not stopping here.”
The finale wasn’t just about crowning a winner. It was also a loud statement about Kenya’s creative economy. Collins Okoth, Director of Strategy and Planning at the Kenya Film Commission, called the show “proof that the arts are a serious economic driver,” while StarTimes CEO Jimmy Carter Luoh confirmed the show will run annually for the next 10 years.

Hosted by the electric duo Amina Rabar and Eddie Butita, the night was a dazzling blend of competition, live performances, celebrity cameos, and unfiltered Kenyan creativity. For one barber from Donholm, it ended in a life-changing jackpot—and for the rest of the country, it marked the birth of a new entertainment powerhouse.
