Democracy for Citizens Party Targets Coast Region for Popularization Drive Amid Venue Setback

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is set to launch a major popularization campaign along Kenya’s Coast region this weekend, as part of its broader national strategy to bolster grassroots support ahead of its official party launch.

According to DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, the party will pitch camp at the Coast for a three-day mobilization tour, engaging local residents, stakeholders, and political players as it continues building momentum ahead of its long-anticipated national launch.

“We are heading to the Coast region this weekend to not only popularize our party, but also to scout for a new venue that can accommodate between 40,000 to 50,000 delegates for our national launch,”

Malala said during a press briefing in Nairobi.

The move follows a recent setback after the government denied the party access to the Kasarani Indoor Sports Gymnasium in Nairobi, which had been booked for the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) and official unveiling ceremony.

Malala expressed disappointment over the cancellation, stating that the party had already secured and paid for the venue before receiving a notice from Sports Kenya Director General Gabriel Komora indicating the facility had been reserved for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN).

“We were surprised to receive a letter just two days before our planned meeting, citing CHAN preparations as the reason for the cancellation. But the meeting was to take place at the Indoor Arena, not the football pitch,”

Malala remarked, questioning the rationale behind the last-minute withdrawal.

Despite the hurdle, the party remains resolute. Malala confirmed that the DCP leadership will consider the Mkomani Showground in Nyali Constituency among potential alternatives for the upcoming launch.

“Our commitment remains firm. The launch will go ahead this month as scheduled. We will first hold our National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at our party headquarters in Riara Centre, Nairobi, where we’ll unveil our vision, manifesto, and leadership,”

he added.

The DCP, a relatively new entrant in Kenya’s political landscape, is positioning itself as a grassroots-driven alternative, with a focus on inclusive governance and democratic accountability.

As the party intensifies its groundwork, political observers are keenly watching how it will navigate logistical challenges and build its presence across key regions in the lead-up to the 2027 general election.
