LG Celebrates 100 Global Design Awards as Demand for Smart Solutions Rises in East Africa

Corporate News

As East Africa’s appetite for energy-efficient, connected and convenience-driven home technologies accelerates, LG Electronics is cementing its position as one of the region’s most influential innovators. Urban hubs such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam and Juba are witnessing a surge in consumer demand for appliances that can be controlled remotely, learn user habits and optimize energy consumption.

Market forecasts indicate that the penetration of smart home appliances in Kenya alone will more than double within four years, rising from 2.8 percent of households in 2025 to an estimated 5.9 percent by 2029.

Commanding a strong share of the home electronics market in Kenya, LG has responded to this shift with a sustained pipeline of design-driven, user-centric products. The company’s innovation efforts were once again validated in 2025 through an impressive sweep of 100 international design accolades across leading global award platforms.

Among them were distinctions from the Red Dot Design Award, the iF Design Award and the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA)—three of the world’s most respected design competitions. These multiple wins reflect LG’s focus on building modern, future-ready technologies that align with evolving lifestyles in fast-growing African cities.

LG’s performance at this year’s Red Dot Design Award was particularly notable. The company secured 12 distinctions in the Brands & Communication Design category, spotlighting the refined user experience offered by LG ThinQ, its widely adopted smart home ecosystem, and its webOS smart TV platform. Red Dot judges also celebrated the FURON symbol, a design language that interprets LG’s philosophy of “empathetic intelligence”—technology that combines warmth, simplicity and emotional connection.

The Red Dot program evaluates excellence across Product Design, Design Concept and Brands & Communication Design. For East African consumers, where convenience, sustainability and intuitive functionality are fast becoming key purchasing considerations, these categories underscore LG’s alignment with regional market needs.

Earlier in the year, LG claimed the coveted Best of the Best distinction in both Product Design and Design Concept categories. Thirty-five of its products—ranging from refrigerators and washing machines to air conditioners, audio systems, purifiers, displays and service robots—received top-tier awards. Many of these products are already widely used in East Africa for their durability and energy-saving capabilities. My Taste Company, one of LG’s in-house ventures, also captured a Best of the Best award for its DUOBO capsule coffee system, a customizable brewer expected to resonate strongly with Kenya’s vibrant coffee culture.

Recognition continued at the 2025 IDEA Awards, hosted by the Industrial Designers Society of America. LG earned 16 distinctions, including accolades for its groundbreaking LG SIGNATURE OLED T—the world’s first truly wireless transparent OLED television. Capable of toggling between opaque and transparent modes, the OLED T has now been honored by Red Dot, iF and IDEA, establishing it as one of the year’s defining technological milestones.

Other products earning IDEA praise included the LG SIGNATURE refrigerator with Smart InstaView™, the LG ARTCOOL air conditioner, the portable LG StanbyME 2 display, and the FURON identity system.

In April, LG added 36 more awards at the iF Design Award 2025, including a prestigious Gold Award. Winners spanned Product Design, Communication, UX, UI and Packaging, with standout recognition for the LG ThinQ ON AI home hub and the LG QNED TV—both examples of the company’s commitment to designing technology that adapts to varied domestic lifestyles across global markets.

Further acknowledgments went to the cheerful LG ThinQ Character and LG Iconography (UI), praised for enhancing engagement and simplifying digital interactions.

Guided by its global philosophy of creating a “Better Life for All,” LG is focusing on inclusive, intuitive and purposeful design. Extensive consumer research—including insights from Kenya and the wider East African region—continues to shape how the company integrates technology, aesthetics and everyday usability.

“As we pursue lifestyle-driven innovation, our goal is to deliver solutions that improve convenience and create meaningful emotional connections with users,”

said Chung Wook-jun, head of the Corporate Design Center at LG Electronics.
